Submitting Characters for Registration
line

1. Who may submit characters?

Essentially anyone, but to ensure a workable system, a membership registration is required. Currently applications and communications with the Center may be in Japanese or English.

2. What kinds of characters may and may not be submitted?

2.1. Characters that may be submitted

Characters or symbols within the following scope which have not yet been given a TRON Code assignment.
1. Characters, as well as symbols necessary for writing text, that are currently in use or have been used in the past, and which are attested in documents. Here documents includes not only books or other printed materials but also epitaphs and inscriptions recorded on film or archived electronically, etc.
2. The characters may come from any period, ancient to modern, and from any place in the world. Characters that were created for novels or cinema are also eligible.

2.2. Characters that may be unacceptable

1. Characters for which copyright or other legal issues may arise from their inclusion in the publicly available TRON Code.
If the submitting party negotiates with the copyright holder, obtains permission to submit the character and appends that written permission, the character may be submitted.
Example 1: Characters that are original creations for a cinematic production, and the characters themselves or the language, country name, etc., are copyrighted or trademarks.
Example 2: Characters found in ancient writings that have been collected by a researcher, who has announced the characters in a paper. In such cases it is likely that the character set itself is copyrighted, and cannot be submitted without first obtaining permission from the copyright holder.
2. Characters for which the attached documents are not clear.
3. Characters attested in documents that are not trustworthy.
4. A character that cannot easily be represented two-dimensionally, or that is of indeterminate shape making it difficult to treat as a character.
5. Artistic characters that should be considered as fonts rather than as characters.

2.3. Submitting a character set

It is possible to submit an entire set of characters, if they were used historically as a character set or can be grouped as a set for other reasons. If numbers have been assigned to the characters for computer classification, the characters may be arranged in that numerical order. When characters are submitted as a set, please note that on the application. Registering an entire character set may result in some overlap with other registered characters, but this overlap is allowable.

3. From application to registration

1. Please check first of all whether the character for submission has already been registered, making use of thecharacter search page of the TRON Character Resource Center or a BTRON-specification product.
2. Register as a member and obtain a member ID.
3. Print out the application form, fill in the necessary items and mail it with appended documentation to the TRON Character Resource Center. (Faxed applications will not be accepted due to lack of clarity.)
4. The application will be checked for duplication and to make sure the documentation is sufficient. If there are no problems, a tentative code assignment will be made and the character will be released to the public. Normally the character will be recorded by scanning an image of it from the submitted documentation. If font data is provided that can be released publicly, that may be used.
5. When the character is released, the submitting party will be notified of the assigned code by email (only).
6. After a one-month period for continued checking and for public comments, if no problems are found the character will be registered. It is possible that the original code assignment will change during this time. Email (only) notification will be made to the submitting party only if registration was cancelled or if the code assignment was changed.

4. Fonts

It is not the role of the TRON Character Resource Center to create fonts. They may be created freely by font manufacturers, BTRON-specification OS vendors, or volunteers. The TRON Character Resource Center will offer links or other pointers to places where such fonts (whether free or commercial) are distributed, and will provide font download services.

5. Preparing documentation for submissions

1. Download the Application for Character Registration with the TRON Character Resource Center in one of the formats below and print it out.

2. Submit a separate application form for each character. Be sure to include your Member ID, name and email address on the first page of each application form for each character. Append documents attesting the character, and staple together the documents for each character so they do not become detached.
3. Character samples should be enlarged to around 20 mm square for clarity and attached to the application.
4. Copies of source documents
On the application form, indicate the name of the attesting document, the author, publisher, date of publication, edition, page, paragraph and line number, etc. Attach a copy of the place where the character occurs and its context, enlarged by 200 percent, as well as copies of the pages immediately preceding and following that page.
In the case of inscriptions and the like, provide clear photographs (L size) such that the character appears in the center of the photo at a size of around 20 mm square, as well as photos showing the overall scene in which the inscription was photographed. As source information indicate an address, building name, name and location where the character can be confirmed, etc. Inscriptions found in museums are acceptable, but only if permission was obtained to photograph the character and submit it for this purpose, and only if the submitting party did the actual photographing.
5. Character baseline
Some characters have multiple forms, like the upper and lower case of alphabet characters, or may vary in shape depending on where they appear in a word. For this reason the search page of the TRON Character Resource Center uses a red line to indicate the baseline of a character. In the case of characters whose baseline and position in context are significant factors, please indicate alongside the character sample an image of the character with the baseline indicated by a red line.
6. Character information
Include information about the character to the extent known.
7. Return of submitted materials
Please note that materials submitted to the TRON Character Resource Center cannot be returned.
